Do I need a Regular License or an Extended License?

On Devmakr, you can purchase themes, code, graphics, video templates, and 3D items under either a Regular License or an Extended License. Here’s a guide to help you choose the right license for your project.

Key Differences Between Regular and Extended Licenses

  1. Regular License – Best for projects distributed free of charge. For instance, if your end product incorporating the purchased item is accessible to the public without requiring payment, the Regular License will typically cover your use.
  2. Extended License – Required if your end product is sold or otherwise restricted to paying customers. This applies when your project is monetized directly through user access, rather than being freely available.

Special Note on Photos:
Photos are also available under both licenses; however, they follow specific rules that differ from those outlined here. For more on licensing photos, check out our Photo Licensing FAQ.

Examples of When Each License is Needed

Regular License Examples:

  • Freelance Projects: You create a website for a client’s business that’s accessible to the public free of charge.
  • Commercial Websites with Free Access: Websites that generate income through e-commerce or ads but are freely accessible to users.
  • Advertisements on Free Media: An advertisement created with graphics and displayed on free-access TV.
  • Public Blogging Sites: Blogging themes (like those found in the blogging category on Devmakr) can use a Regular License, even if the blog site has a paywall.

Extended License Examples:

  • Restricted Access Content: Using a plugin in both the free and paid sections of a website requires an Extended License.
  • Paid Games: A 3D model included in a game that’s sold to the public.
  • Broadcast TV Shows: If you use a video template in a show broadcast on TV, an Extended License is required, even if end users view the show for free.

What Counts as “Free of Charge” Access?

“Free of charge” means the end product incorporating the licensed item is accessible without payment. This does not restrict the product from generating revenue indirectly (e.g., through ads) as long as no payment is required to access the product itself.

Scenarios for Determining License Needs

Scenario License Needed
A plugin used in a free-to-access site with ads Regular
A plugin in both free and members-only sections Extended
A graphic in an ad on subscription TV Regular
A video template for a show on free-access YouTube Regular
A 3D model in a free game with premium-only access Extended
A blogging theme for a paywalled website Regular

Extended License Limitations

Both Regular and Extended Licenses apply to a single end product. For multiple end products, additional licenses are required unless specified otherwise.

When choosing a license, consider whether your project will be accessible free of charge or only to paying customers. For more detailed scenarios or if you’re using items editorially, consult our FAQs for specific cases.
